A rare George II period mahogany kettle stand (c. 1735 English)

A rare early 18th century mahogany tripod base kettle stand. The moulded edge tray top sits above a conical turned stem over an arcaded platform tripod base with cabriole legs and shaped pad feet. The subtle detail that joins the separate elements of the turned stem and cabriole legs is regarded as a sign of quality: this triform plinth would have been more expensive to make, a stronger join and of course more architecturally pure. It is interesting to note that Chippendale continued to use this form of tripod up until the 1760's.
