A charming and rare early Georgian mahogany bureau. (c. 1730 English.)
Almost certainly made by a man schooled in the craft of making walnut bureaux! Although in early 'Cuban' mahogany, it exactly follows the lines and dictums of a walnut veneer piece but is in veneered mahogany. The fall front has solid cross grain mouldings, rounded corners and a moulded book rest; the interior is very baroque, with no well but secret drawers behind the centre door; there are just three deep drawers with chamfered lock recesses and rounded drawer sides, framed by applied carcass mouldings. |
